Dynamic shakedown and degradation of elastic reactions in laterally impacted steel tubes

چکیده
This paper reports some interesting observations on the response of laterally impacted steel tubes which in some respects have been considered to undergo an elastic shakedown. In an experimental study on the behaviour of axially compressed tubes under lateral impacts, it has been noticed that, after full development of plastic deformations in the impacted bodies, the structural system ceases to exhibit additional plastic responses. The impacted tubes then exhibit an elastic response. It has also been observed that the amplitude of the elastic excitations in the specimens becomes more restricted as the load configuration moves close to a dynamic failure state. With load conditions quite close to the dynamic failure limit, almost no elastic excitation has been perceived from the impacted specimens. Additional numerical and analytical investigations have been carried out on impacted tubes, frames and non-linear Single Degree of Freedom (SDOF) systems and similar results have been obtained. Despite the non-cyclic nature of the external loads in these impact cases, a phenomenon similar to elastic shakedown has been observed.

OPTIMAL SHAKEDOWN ANALYSIS OF LATERALLY LOADED PILE WITH LIMITED RESIDUAL STRAIN ENERGY
For application of the plastic analysis and design methods the control of the plastic behaviour of the structures is an important requirement. In this study, the complementary strain energy of the residual forces is considered as an overall measure of the plastic performance of the structure. Shakedown theorem for the analysis of the plastic behaviour of the laterally loaded piles is developed ...
متن کاملDynamic Characteristics of Joined Steel and Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Plastic Tubes: Experimental and Numerical Investigation
The fundamental frequencies and mode shapes of steel and carbon fiber–reinforced plastic (CFRP) cylindrical shells with steel inserts were investigated using finite element analysis and modal testing. The free-free boundary condition was tested with modal testing using the roving hammer method and verified by finite element analysis using ABAQUS. The results show good agreement between the test...

This research deals with axial and oblique impact crash tests on simple and hybrid composite tubes. Axial and oblique impact tests have been generated on simple and hybrid composite tubes with one, two and three layers. A drop test rig was used to conduct the experiments. Furthermore, in order to gain more detailed knowledge about the crash process, finite element simulations of the experim...
متن کاملShakedown analysis of soil materials based on an incremental approach
In this paper, an incremental technique based on cyclic loading is developed to implement shakedown analysis for soils in the framework of elastic-plastic analysis without utilization of the classical shakedown theorems. A finite element model together with the use of ABAQUS is established for soil structures subjected to cyclic loads, where the Mohr-Coulomb yield criterion with associated plas...
متن کاملDynamic buckling and fragmentation in brittle rods.
We present experiments on the dynamic buckling and fragmentation of slender rods axially impacted by a projectile. By combining the results of Saint-Venant and elastic beam theory, we derive a preferred wavelength lambda for the buckling instability, and experimentally verify the resulting scaling law for a range of materials including teflon, dry pasta, glass, and steel. For brittle materials,...
